Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) call to action

Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) call to action

December 12, 2025

Brothers and Sisters:

The IBEW is calling on all members to mobilize now and urge their members of Congress to keep the NRC independent.

For decades, the United States has upheld the gold standard of nuclear safety through the independent Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Today, that independence is under threat: a recent executive order favors political decision-making over expertise, the President removed bipartisan Commissioner Christopher Hanson without cause, and hundreds of skilled NRC staff have departed without qualified replacements.

An independent NRC ensures the regulatory certainty the nuclear industry and IBEW members rely on, and IBEW’s highly trained workforce is a major reason the union represents two-thirds of U.S. operating reactors. With rising demand for carbon-free baseload power, nuclear energy is at a crossroads, and the IBEW-backed ADVANCE Act gives the NRC tools to accelerate deployment while protecting safety. A politicized NRC would endanger workers and the public, while damaging U.S. credibility abroad, and creating instability across the industry.
